Apart from being a damn catchy tune, I find this song to be really interesting from a popular culture perspective on a few levels.
Cornershop were among the vanguard of British Indian artists of the 1990s who added Asian influences to music genres in the UK along with legends like Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney. At the time, it was exciting to see this kind of cultural diffusion and experimentation enter the mainstream.
And you can listen to them every week as they provided the theme music for the podcast “Oh God, What Now?” https://www.podmasters.co.uk/oh-god-what-now
Yes, my thoughts exactly. I would also say that specifically, having the subject matter being a tribute Indian music/cinema, their name being a reference to cultural stereotypes and the mix of musical styles and influences (Indian, electronica, indie etc.)
I loved this song back in the day too.
Afraid to ask but, what is a brimful of asha?
its about a British South Asian binge listening to Bollywood soundtracks sung by Asha Bhosle…
Oh! I have this track of hers on my phone!
Aaja aaja main hyun pyar tera
Love it.
I have no idea what he’s saying, but I feel like I can relate to that man.
Every once in awhile I remind my wife that, “everyone needs a bosom for a pillow.”
