AI summary
West Africa is at the forefront of geopolitical tensions marked by military coups and the rise of nationalist governments challenging neocolonial practices, particularly those of France. These governments seek to control their rich resources like gold and uranium for economic growth and national sovereignty, angering Western powers advocating neocolonialism. The expulsion of French soldiers from Mali and Niger, both pivotal in Western military operations, underscores the regions’ significance. Despite Western claims of authoritarianism, nationalist governments enjoy strong popular support, resisting intervention and forging alliances with Russia and China. The West exaggerates Russian influence while projecting their neocolonialism. Geopolitical conflicts manifest the struggle for autonomy in West Africa.
Here is primarily where Mr. Norton is sourcing everything from if you are all interested.
Some other interesting notes:
- Majority support Russia as the most ‘trustworthy foreign actor’, this includes China
- Majority support military junta staying in power, separate pluralities for ‘an extended period’ and ‘until new elections are held’. 54% do not want military intervention from ECOWAS
- Data is from ‘Premise data’. a crowdsourced (??) polling aggregate from users in various countries. https://www.premise.com/why-premise/
- Typical ‘new and amazing breakthrough company’ bullshit lingo aside, they seem to just have a ready crowd of ‘volunteers’ in various places that they can send questions to at any time, idk if they posted anything about demographics or specific polling data as I can’t find the poll itself.
https://tass.com/world/1658013 This outlet claims that ‘The poll was conducted among highly educated male citizens, 62% of whom were residents of the capital.’
On reddit, the article received a few comments about how Africans dont want democracy and then was deleted on /r/worldnews.
That’s essentially what I’ve found on this specific topic.

Back in my day they were called troll farms
I honestly can’t figure out if your entire account is simply for pro-Russian astroturfing or if you are actually sincerely believe the incredibly low-quality information you find online.
You realize that first source they linked is the Economist lol? Is that a pro-Russian propaganda outlet?
…and then they link TASS. Lol.
iS tHaT a PrO rUsSiAn sOuRcE?
If both sources are saying the same thing, maybe you should take away that not all news from a Russian source is automatically bullshit, and not that the Economist is a pro-Putin propaganda outlet.
Real news can still be used to push a propaganda narrative
“Veritas” is the notorious right wing troll organization which produces fake news for the Republican party. Might not be related here but that is my association
sir have you heard of Latin lol?
It’s also the motto and feature of the logo of Harvard University, and many other things.
Project Veritas, if it’s still operational after being sued so much, is an operational hub for chuds, which we luckily don’t see that many of on lemmy.
78% of niger population support the coup
Where did that number come from? Hpw did the pro west president win in previous election if 78% of population doesnt support him? Whats thediffereencee between french colonism and russian colonsim ?
Polling numbers within dictatorships mean jack shit.
But now they mean something ? ( Assuming a poll was made to get the 78% figure)
What? It’s a military dictatorship now. Even if you actually poll people, most wouldn’t dare to say the truth. Protesters were already shot by the military.
Hpw did the pro west president win in previous election if 78% of population doesnt support him?
Lol
nono you don’t understand when russia does it it’s good because if fight imperialismists then not imperialist, silly
Geez! I wonder why would they resist civilization of their people! /s
I was there in 2015 and they loved us. We voted in Trump and a lot of people did a 180. They don’t want anyone lording over them. But their population is 50% kids 14 and under so it’s not an easy place to get well educated leadership from the population so they go with strong men.
Here is an alternative Piped link(s): https://piped.video/watch?v=tAcc6U69E6o
Piped is a privacy-respecting open-source alternative frontend to YouTube.
I’m open-source, check me out at GitHub.
That’s a cool bot! This is a great solution, but I wish more lemmy clients allowed privacy redirects built in
On android you can install untrackme (lite) which can redirect different services to alternative front ends
Thx
