The funny thing is, The Facebook was originally MySpace, except you couldn’t configure the look of your page and you couldn’t have autoplaying music. So the original sell was “MySpace but not obnoxious.” That was a decent enough sell, but then they removed the requirement to have a university email address to register, and it was straight downhill from there.

But this was also the time of shit like Live Journal, so this sorta thing was on the tip of everyone’s tongue anyway.
