I’m genuinely so excited to see some of the more focussed communities blossom on this platform as they have on Reddit over the years. Which are your favourites and which do you think could succeed here?
All the niche communities. I’ve been here for a couple months now but boy is that what we need.
That’s what I think too, I think we need more of them before this will hit wider adoption. There are several general instances, which are great, but we need to start seeing more specific ones. I’m thinking ones that aren’t necessarily for “Sign up here for my instance” but more “Hey, here’s a few communities you can subscribe to if you’re interested”
niche communities are [both] hard AND easy.
some niche communites have a hard time staying active on ordinary reddit. (so therefore what does that mean for lemmy’s sucess rate)
on the otherhand:
reddit nich communites are such a horrific failure , in many cases, that literally one active poster would make lemmy versions massively superior to shitty mainstream reddit.Have you tried reaching out to them to talk to them about Lemmy?
I’m surprised to find there are no adult subs popping up.
I hit up my brother in law who is involved in the adult industry and he is going to spin up an instance that’s super ok with adult content in the next day or so.
Let’s face it, without porn tumbler disappeared, and I think Reddit will too when it bans anything nsfw
Thank you for your (brother’s) service 🫡
This is the dev run instance, and we don’t have time to moderate that.
Android but without the fascist moderation
I support anything creative, unfortunately I’m not seeing a lot of that yet. I build models, dioramas, scratch build buildings, etc.
I was tempted to start a general making community where all disciplines of making are supported, but as far as I can see on the app that isn’t an option.
I suggested a diy subreddit on the sub suggestion thread iver at beehaw
Same. It seems like there aren’t any active communities here about art, which is a massive shame.
Ask Historians, Animals Being Derps, Astrophotography, the * Interesting subs, all the game specific, and band specific subs
I follow quite a few bands on Reddit and those are the biggest communities I’d be sad to see gone. I’m number 1 a Swiftie and made this to make sure that community survives any Reddit fallout, but any band communities are welcome on my instance: https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech/
(Literally went up today so it’s a bit empty, community creation is open though!)
internet is beautiful
r/twobestfriendsplay is the main one I have not brought over that I am too shy to because its so community based.
Besides that would like some more generalized art/hobby subs, stuff like r/pixelart, r/blender, the xheads music subreddits. I already made !indieheads@lemmy.ml, but I would love to see the rest! And maybe some of the aesthetic subs too, like liminalspaces (if there isn’t already), global village coffeehouse, and skeuomorphism.
Also r/regards, but IDK anything about bots to set up something like that, plus what makes it work hinges entirely on it being an invite only subreddit. I’m not sure how to bring something like that over to Lemmy.
Also this is a deep cut but r/easywdw. They don’t deserve to lose their community again. :(
Lol yin and yang my friend. I’m subscribing to yours, and I host popheads. I’ll add a link to yours in my bio
Thank you! I will also check out yours as well
Thanks! https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech/c/popheads for general, or https://poptalk.scrubbles.tech for the entire instance. (Just started today, so just a fledgling)
Just subscribed!
I too would love a tbfp community on here. That and the Project Zomboid subreddit were the only ones I really browsed anymore.
EDIT: also there is a liminal space community on here. I haven’t quite figured out the link formatting yet but it’s on lemmy.ml ( !liminalspace@lemmy.ml ?)
Or /kbin magazine: @LiminalSpace
!y2kaestethics@sopuli.xyz for Y2K aesthetics
!frutigeraero@sopuli.xyz for Frutiger Aeto
!weirdcore@sopuli.xyz for weirdcorewow thank you!
SPORTS! The sports subreddits for specific leagues or teams were some of my most visited. I always hated r/NFL though because the mods only really allowed twitter links rather than legit discussion. I’m going to try and be as active as I can in the NFL and NBA communities here, and I might open some for my favorite teams.
This is actually a great opportunity to organically develop communities like r/NBAdiscussion but for other leagues. I always found reddit to be lacking a real football discussion subreddit, and r/NFL had such strict rules you couldn’t even talk about relevant topics, such as EA and the NFL exclusive license (any Madden-related post would be auto-removed and told to post on r/Madden), and you also couldn’t advertise an NFL discussion based sub anywhere either.
There’s got to be an overlap between Lemmy users and sports fans! I can’t be the only tech nerd who is interested in the fediverse and also loves American sports!
Agreed. For me it’s motorsports. There’s an existing F1 community but it’s not very active. I’m hopeful that it’ll grow and we’ll see other communities form around it for other sports.
I prefer formuladank personally but idk if I’d be welcome here
I made a motorsport community yesterday link . it’s very empty at the moment but hopefully it’ll grow with time.
Yeah, one of the few things I still use reddit for regularly is NHL discussion. (Go Capitals!) I wish we had communities for that here.
The other subreddits I still use regularly are for specific video games. Some of them really have no hope of making it to lemmy, but I think we could probably fit pokemon discussion and trading stuff here.
I expect a large influx of redditors over the next few months, especially when they kill off old.reddit and the 3rd party apps no longer work. So if you create (if it isn’t already created) an NHL and Pokemon community here, I’m sure users will find them and they would become active eventually. We are decently early here in my opinion.
Looks like an NFL community has been created. Just need to get them going for the other sports as well.
Yeah it exists, but it had only 10 members and one total post when I joined an hour ago. I just created a New York Giants community and I’m going to be posting to the NFL one throughout the season to help it grow!
An NBA community also exists at a similar size. I’ll go ahead and create a Nets community for my team there.
Well, at least I’ve subbed to add one more to the list. I’ll go comment in the ‘favorite team’ thread to at least kick things off in that thread as well.
I def would like more activity on !rust@lemmy.ml , !uncle_bens@lemmy.ml, and !startrek@lemmy.ml.
Well I just subbed to !uncle_bens@lemmy.ml and read your posts. I haven’t got much to add yet as I’m currently doing my second attempt as the first one needed to be aborted early. Fingers crossed and I’ll add some stuff there if I have anything
I want to see all the niche game specific subs, or at least how they used to be. Reddit started going downhill recently, with lots of good discussion moving to discord, and subreddits just being flooded with memes. I hate searching for anything on Discord…
Definitely kindle/ereader community
As a Kobo owner, yes.
anime, books and fanfiction, there are many subreddits for each of those topics
I dont know if my niche will quite fit the site yet, but I’ve followed a lot of animal subs ( crestedgecko, aidke, partyparrot, the twenty thousand cat subs… catsbeingcats of course a favorite ) and also a lot of botany style subs ( botany is the obvious one, houseplants, houseplantcirclejerk, savagegarden, mycology ) and then the unusual to pique interest ( unusualvideos, atbge, designdesign, barbarawalters4scale, hmmmgifs )
Special call out to /todayilearned a /awwducational for giving me fun facts to share with my co workers.
I think if there were master communities it would help appeal to a broad crowd.
Looks like there is a todayilearned community !todayilearned@lemmy.ml, but it seems dead at the moment
I just made !awwducational@lemmy.ml to roll up some of my favorite animal subs.
Ukraine, really miss the content from that subreddit. Pretty much the only thing I really miss.
games, mechanicalkeyboards, fountainpens, boardgames, music, indiemusic, audio, audiophile, headphones, …
so many!
