The trailer looked fun but I just had a feeling it wasn’t going to be good. Heard some good reactions on a movie podcast I follow so I decided to watch it today. It is really well done. Lots of funny parts, and just weird enough to not be offputting. Felt kind of like a combination of Get Out and Sorry to Bother You, with some Blaxploitation and retrofuturism thrown in. John Boyega was really good and Jamie Foxx was a delight as always. Teyonah Parris seemed a lot more comfortable in this than her roles in the MCU. Probably just because she had a lot more to do. There’s also a great actor that has a smaller role that I was not expecting to be in this, but he was a welcome addition. Not going to say who and give it away though. I don’t really have a lot to say because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I definitely recommend it. Funny enough, there is a Tyrone in the movie, but it’s not any of the main characters, but it’s an interesting story point.
Bonus: They redid Erykah Badu’s “Better Call Tyrone” to “They Cloned Tyrone” and played it over the end credits.
Toss in a recommendation from me, too. Just watched it last weekend and it was a lot of fun. I have to wonder how much of Jamie Foxx’s lines were improv or written as is, because he was one of the highlights for me. Just a really solid movie overall.
Some of Teyonah’s lines sounded very natural too, even the ones with cliches like “habitual line stepper.”
Overall I really liked the dialogue between the main trio.
“habitual line stepper” was what Charlie Murphy said about Rick James in that Chappelle’s Show skit.
When the three were together was the highlight for me, They played off eachother so well.
Jamie Foxx is just so good. It’s honestly unfair how talented he is. I remember realizing he was going to be huge watching his stand-up specials where he sings, plays piano, and improvs at the end. Look up “Vibin with Jamie Foxx”. It’s the end piece to his last special and it’s fantastic.
Throwing in a recommendation as well. Loved the sci-fi references they had to a few classic sci-fi films.
Examples? I wasn’t paying full attention while watching, so I think I missed most of them.
A clockwork orange, for one.
Oh yeah, that girl being shown the videos. Didn’t even register for some reason.
They Cloned Tyrone was so good, I may force the homies to watch this weekend after we’re bored of video games
For real. Such a fantastic flick!
