Hello comrades and welcome to the first improvement megathread of April!
As usual, some discussion ideas:
- It’s the first Sunday of the month. Is there something that you wish to accomplish or improve in April?
- Do you want to share something you’ve done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
- Do you have any streaks? For example, “sober for one day.” Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
- If you don’t have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
- Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Hey, yeah slap me on there. I’ll probably have to make a post about everything I’m trying to improve haha
Welcome aboard comrade, glad to have you with us!
What would you like to improve?
Primarily strength training. I’ve been building up a baseline with pushups, dips, curls, etc but I want to start keeping track of PRs with weights. I’ve put on 15lbs of muscle in the last 3 months or so, which has been pretty easy since I was so light - primarily due to my next point
Also to keep clean, I have been sober for awhile, but once an addict always an addict so it’s an ongoing thing
Mixing a couple of break days to give my body a bit more of a chance to recover. Still mostly doing some light weightlifting for about 15-20 minutes on most days and running when the weather allows it. Currently resting on what’s been my longest run so far (~4-5 miles or 6-8km). Also had my fastest pace. Been improving and I’m down to about 10min/mi from about 13 when I started. Knee pain has improved with every run also.
As for my goals for April, mainly maintain consistency in the frequency of my workouts. Also hope to start jogging as part of my commute home.
Dietwise I want to cut down more on fast food, which so far is probably my biggest obstacle in losing weight. I’ve been stable for the past 3 months, which while not ideal, also isn’t the worst thing as I actually feel pretty good now.
In so far as my mental health/social life I want to keep on opening up to my coworkers and reconnecting with friends. I already started taking more breaks in the breakroom. And I’ve already gotten back in contact with one of my friends from the past and we had a great conversation.
Hell yeah, sounds like you’re making great progress! Are you using any apps for running? How are you tracking your distance and pace?
I have a smart watch/fitness tracker to record distance and pace along with Samsung Health.
This past week was stressful but I managed to accomplish my goal, which was to go running on two days. I usually run for around 50 minutes with two short walking breaks in between. I also went hiking today. On average I walked for 8k steps every day this week. Good week for walking
Next week I’m visiting my parents in my hometown so I’m not gonna go running but I would like to go on bike rides and hiking. It would be great if I could do some reading as well. But my main priority is vibing with my cat and dog
Music:
Last Jam session I really feel like I leveled up, I played cool shit, kept great time, made everyone sound good. I’m really proud of my volume control and feel.
I’m working on this idea lately and all of its permutations:
LLK KLL KKL LKK. (K is for kick, L is for left hand but you can substitute L for R anywhere)
I think having the 3:2 thing is mandatory for a modern vocabulary and i’m trying to get it super clean and be able to start it in different parts of the beat with all sorts of sticking. I’m doing it as a fill, as comping pattern and as a groove.
I’m also working RLLRRLLR which I feel like is a must learn for playing gospel licks.
I’m doing the rhythmic scale at 40 BPM now, metronome on for one measure than off for two. Thats a ton of space but im doing fine with it. The hardest subdivision for me is triplets oddly. Not quarter notes or quarter note triplets, just regular triplets.
Im going to learn about microtime in my next lesson which I feel like I need to learn more about.
I also want to take a lesson with my classical guy because I cant get my left hand to generate as much bouncr as my right.
Im listening to Wynton Kelly - Kelly at Midnite right now.
I love the gap click app, its so illuminating, im at the point now where if its not in time its wrong. I want to be super clean and i want everyone to love me.
Exercise: I got my two mile run under 20 minutes again.
Had myself a little breakdown over the weekend about “why do I even study Marxism/history?” Thinking about my organizing efforts, which after years of doing what I can doesn’t seem to have amounted to much, although admittedly my view of other peoples perceptions tends toward negative and since I have nd issues with time and memory, I might be underselling it to myself.
Anyway, it prompted me to self-crit and try and locate the cause of these feelings, and I discovered that I feel like I’m not doing enough with my studies and lessons from organizing. This prompted me to take an inventory of all of my miscellaneous notes and writings that I’ve compiled over the last few years, and there is a lot. Hundreds of notes on my phone, about 40 half-essays in google docs, and half of a comp book full of written notes. This doesn’t even touch notes I still have to review off of two computers, an old laptop and my PC, and another full comp book that unfortunately has gone missing.
Again, I have issues with time and memory I really had no idea I had produced so much over the years. I’d love to be able to do something with it all, turn it into articles or a zine, or something, I don’t know. But I don’t have any experience with this kind of thing. The only thing I’ve ever had published got rewritten enough that I kind of relinquished it. The rest seems to represent some great waste of effort to my spirit, and I’d like to turn it into something(s), but what? How?
Has anyone faced/encountered something similar? What did you do?
I don’t like to brag, but I’m personally proud of this one. Me and my partner ran our first ever 10km race this weekend. We’re not self described runners, but we have both been trying to get fitter, running has been huge for us, helping weight loss and cardio fitness noticeably. Also good to spend some time . I would say just recently we’re one step along the way to being runners! As we’re just starting to enjoy what had up until now been a form of self inflicted torture.
That’s awesome, congrats on your 10k! If you can run for 10 kilometers, I would definitely say that you are already a runner lol
stepped on the scale after taking a “break” from the hardcore dieting and moving it into something more passive. seems the scale wanted to flatter me yesterday and said 208. I don’t think I’ve seen it that low since high school
yo wtf i just put on the cloth facemask i last wore in like 2020 and there’s like half a centimeter of room now? idk if it stretched or my face shrunk or what
I’m going to look at an office space this week. Me and a couple friends intend to start a little hackspace there.
Hell yea, what are you gonna hack?
Who knows? We are teaching some anarchists how to pick locks.
