Is it possible to get some kind of notification when there are replies to your comments or posts, so that you can more effectively participate in conversation with other users? Maybe there’s a setting I’m not seeing?

This is definitely needed! I’d like the option to get email notifications, but even just a small icon on the top bar when you have unread messages would be great. If there’s a setting somewhere, I haven’t been able to find it either.
Isn’t this already present? Just hover over your username, then go to Settings. Under Notifications, there are four checkboxes:
Notify me of comments in my threads - self-explanatory
Notify me of replies to my threads comments - notification for replies to comments you make in any threads
Notify me of replies in my posts - self-explanatory
Notify me of replies to my posts comments - notification for replies to comments you make in any postsNotification settings will be in your profile under Settings. Scroll down on the “General” tab to see them at the bottom.
