I used to work for a guy who was super religious. He often said if it weren’t for inheriting his father’s small business he would have become a Catholic priest. I was worried being an atheist would bother him but it didn’t. He actually seemed really intrigued and loved to have religious and philosophical discussions with me.

We were driving past a mosque that was letting out one day and he made a comment about how many people were attending. He said “You know, I don’t believe what they believe, but I truly respect how devoted they are.” I gave him a weird look. I said they believe in the same God, they believe in Adam and Eve, they believe in the 10 commandments, they believe Jesus existed and spoke the word of God, they believe all of that and I don’t! He had way more beliefs in common with a Muslim than he did with me!

He said “I meant…culturally.” I would come to learn when my boss brought up “culture” he was about to say something racist. He didn’t care if they had similar religious, social, and political beliefs. They had a different skin colour, spoke a different language, and ate different food! They just had too many “cultural” differences to see eye to eye!
