Man I forgot about Colfer. He wrote some one-off sci-fi book I read as a sheltered kid and it blew my mind. Cant remember what it was called but it had something to do with energy-based creatures that you could only see if you had nearly died. It was kind of a cyberpunk-lite novel for kids
YES! Maybe I should read it again for nostalgia’s sake. I can’t imagine it’s very long since little me got through it. I think it was my first modern sci-fi book which was a very different vibe from things like John Carter of Mars

Supernaturalists is the title I think. Should be on my shelf at home, so I might be able to edit this and confirm later.
