I noticed that Lemmy has the reddit system with upvotes and down votes, but I didn’t found anything about the general ratio of up/down a user have, am I missing something or it is intended?
I hope there will never be a thing such as a karma system on Lemmy.
Personally, I don’t want people to write just what other want to read.
Instead, I want people to write what they really want to say without thinking about their score and the restrictions in case of not having enough points (this doesn’t mean that everyone should feel free to be a bigot of course. Bigotry, obnixious trolling, etc… are not okay and definitely desserve ban).
That’s a valid and valuable point.

In a way, both systems are just different implementations of social regulation. One system achieves it through numbers. If you remove numbers, people will still express their approval or dismissal, in words. This has some regulating effect on what people write, how openly they express themselves. And I’m not even sure that’s a bad thing.
Of course, in a system with karma people can still additionally express their reactions with words.
My main point is, we cannot have a system without social regulation, that’s just an inherent part of human interactions. I can think of reasons for and against amplifying it further with karma. Personally I like it though.
I think they were refering to “karma whoring”. It has nothing to do with social regulation, just the fact that there’s a bunch of people (and bots!) that will do anything for fake internet points. It’s just insincere at the end of the day.
Yes, I think you are right. I did not distinguish properly between karma within a thread, and karma across threads, on an account level.
Within threads (which is what we have here) karma can function as a social regulator. Across threads (which we don’t have) it depends on too many other factors like community size to have that effect.
I agree the latter encourages “karma whoring” without being able to sort good from bad anymore. So at the end of the day, I find the current system is a quite sensible compromise.
Sorry to inform you that there already is, it’s just that most instances don’t expose it. But lemmy keeps track of all the up and down votes and i believe it’s all public with the right query to the instance.
I love to create content (comments, posts) that are both thought-provoking of more serious topics, and content for amusement as well. While agreeing on the rules, I want to go and be me (delving bravely in controversial topics as well since I enjoy them too), without trying in purpose to generate only stuff that I know is already-agreeable to folks for gaining only Internet points.
I know that karma is a double-edged sword - it can give a boost to someone who wants to create good content, making more of it while feeling appreciated…and the same thing for someone who just goes “full s***posting”. Don’t get me wrong - both have their time and place to be important, but…
…I admit I find myself thinking and wishing for a karma system, repeatedly. I have already counted some of the votes I’ve gotten from my top comments and posts (yes, negatives calculated too!) once. But if the deal just is that there won’t be a karma system because it would create more harm than good, I’ll accept it, continue dreaming and trying to make more content. And calculating my gains once in a while to get any idea of where I’m at 😂 (could be cool if there was an Online tool that did the calculating by entering my username!)
Not gamifying the desire to give “correct” answers is a positive and not negative IMO
I’m a new user, using phone app right now, can’t find anything like that. I guess user karma is like Bitcoin, great in theory but not so great given lots of time and the effects of incentives on human behavior
it was intentional
Ah, I do like the idea of having a personal moderation memory; count of how many times I’ve upvoted and downvoted another user, which only I see.
From there, is the idea that others could subscribe to my “personal” moderation history and use as a reference for their own interface. Example, if someone spends a lot of time labelling things NSFW, I could subscribe to their labels and not need to do extra work myself.
This is a pretty cool idea. I am also seeing that kbin seems to keep track of what it calls a “reputation”. So we can theoretically have tools that try to aggregate publicly available data to come up with a reputation score, even if lemmy doesn’t provide it natively. That would probably have something that a lot of mods would want, but it would be helpful for users too.
This tool and system will probably show up whether it is native to lemmy or not. I can imagine a scenario where how much reputation or karma matters is up to each individual instance. It would be cool to have a system that browses in “civil” and “unmoderated” modes honestly, I would probably enjoy that, and leave it up to the users and owners of each individual instance.
thanks!
The Mlem app for iOS shows a personal “karma” count, but the there’s no official system, as @einsofohr@lemmy.world said.
Jerboa looks like it has the points system, but it’s only tied to a specific post or comment, unlike Reddit with it being overarching.
