It’s funny you mentioned bailment, the bank is absolutely required to keep enough cash on hand in order to satisfy what the FDIC deems to be a reasonable amount of coverage for their deposit accounts. (search “demand deposit account”)

That might be your bank. My bank is as annoying as you describe, but it is as secure as you’re saying it should be. 2FA, they hold up suspicious purchases to see if it’s really me, I can lock and unlock my cards from the app. Smaller banks tend to be the way to go, or credit unions if you have a good one nearby.
All those disclaimers are out there for liability purposes. It is highly unlikely that you will brick your phone as long as you follow the instructions and avoid making any modifications to the way the hardware runs (do not overclock, do not underclock etc).
As much as I love shitting on the rosary rattler megacorp, they have nothing even approaching exclusivity in that department. They’re just the biggest organization in the world (that I know of) that gets away with actively spending money covering it up.
If you’re gonna use both for now, I would recommend downloading an ad blocker. AdGuard and ublock origin (the word origin is important, there is a knockoff called ublock) are both good. It was greed that motivated Reddit to pull this shit, might as well deny them ad revenue.
I would say it’s more like when a bunch of friends collectively break up with toxic partners and have a big meeting to talk about it. It’ll die down after a while. People on Reddit don’t really talk about Digg anymore.
Before Reddit pissed off the Apollo community, they pissed off me. As a result, I downloaded the books app for my phone and put it where my Apollo app was on my homescreen, then I downloaded a bunch of epubs and loaded the app with them. Reading on my phone isn’t as good as a real book or an ereader, but it goes everywhere with me and therefore so do the books. Being on Reddit for so long, I pretty much have the muscle memory of opening Apollo when I am bored programmed into my lizard brain, so I end up opening the books app. Also, since I am not carrying physical books around, I find myself reading a bunch of books at the same time. I pretty much always am in the middle of a science book, a cooking book, a novel of some sort, and a book about playing pool.
Having read the book, if you read it for that purpose, it would work, it just uses playing pool as a medium for that.
Yeah, I did download a few SW engineering books, but I haven’t gotten to them. I’ve been reading Chris Hadfields books, the Apollo Murders and and Astronauts guide to life on Earth, a few cooking books like The Food Lab, The Wok, Salt Fat Acid and Heat, Mi Cochina, and some books on playing pool like The Pleasures of Small Motions.
You joke, but Reddit did something to piss me off a few months before the current fuckery, and I decided to find an alt and there weren’t really any, like I found Mastodon but that’s more of a Twitter replacement, never encountered this site while searching. What I ended up doing was downloading a bunch of books and putting them on my phone, then putting the books app where my Apollo app used to be on my homescreen. Now, more often than not, when I go to scroll, I end up just opening a book. I’ve got a little over 40 on there, they keep my progress, even across devices, and they work when there’s no signal so I no longer have to fear public toilets with shitty cell signal lol.
