I’d argue we should call all migrant workers expats. Unless they’re literally working in a migratory fashion, spring here, summer there, fall somewhere else, etc.

I always saw expats as something between immigrants and tourists. They aren’t trying to switch countries and they aren’t just on vacation. There’s plenty of good reasons for this category, like being sent somewhere by your employer. This naturally creates a community of foreigners who aren’t necessarily worried about fitting in as a new citizen or permanent resident would be.

But yeah, this idea that Western countries have expats instead of emigrants is weird.

You can absolutely still have volunteer programs like that. Volunteering to work time off faster shows a willingness to work on the problems that landed you in prison. Forcing it just creates misery.

And yet, California voted affirmatively to be a slave state in 2024. I did not have that on my 2024 bingo card.

They’re in prison. Forcing them to do anything is wrong. We’ve already taken their freedom. Using them as labor is morally wrong. Especially when you look at the punishments like solitary.

Oh it’s worse than that. California voted to make more homeless people, expand the three strikes system by turning some misdemeanors into felonies, and voted itself a slave state to take advantage of all that new prison population.

All that’s left is to privatize the pipeline.

But it’s okay, they removed the defunct ban on same sex marriage so they’re still progressive! Yay!

The boomers were actually better than Gen X. The only reason we think people get more conservative is because we had a generation with reliable news. Then as they got older they kept Fox News on whenever they weren’t watching something else, just all the time. They didn’t realize Fox was propaganda and Gen X hasn’t realized CNN was bought out years ago with the specific idea of turning it into Fox News 2.

What we need in this country is some media literacy.
