  • Yeah, my Star Trek knowledge starts and ends with the movies (both the OG Trilogy and the two Abrams films), so most of these meme might as well be in Klingon. But everyone else is having so much fun that it’s fun laugh along like I understand the jokes.

On a related note, if I wanted to get onto Star Trek, what series does everyone recommend starting with?

  • Yeah, 144hz makes a significant difference for competitive FPS games (especially fast paced ones like Overwatch), but I hardly notice a difference when playing single player or PvE oriented games.

Hell, on some games (e.g. Borderlands 3 and CP2077) I actually prefer to play on my 60hz monitor since a smooth 60hz is much more enjoyable IMO than an inconsistent 100-144hz experience. My computer is admittedly pretty old though.

  • Not necessarily.

    A. They might have really liked the flavor and/or mechanics on the UA version and the homebrew version was different enough that it wasn’t as interesting to them

    B. OP might have taken long enough researching Mythic and it’s alternatives that the player had time to reconsider their choice. The player might have been split between the two anyway

    C. The player might have realized that running a homebrew/UA class was going to be a lot of extra work for themselves and/or the GM, so they decided to do something easier

  • Your first two examples open up more opportunities for outplays. The opposing team can recognize that you have picked up on their patterns and then run fake-out plays to catch you off guard. Sign stealing just allows you to know exactly what the other team is about to do and there is no opportunity for them to fake you out. (Other than switching to a new set of signs, but learning signs is boring for the players and not entertaining for the audience).

To equate it to poker: Your first two examples are similar to learning one of your opponents tells. If you start to exploit their tell, they can start faking it to force you to fold or place a bad bet. Sign stealing is like taking a peak at their cards

  • Yeah, I considered including at least the Simarillion in the calculations, but the sales numbers for LoTR and the Hobbit are so staggeringly large that including his other works seemed pointless.

You raise a very good point about holding him responsible for all the works he inspired through. He invented a whole new sub-genre of fantasy, leading to hundreds of millions (if not billions) more books being printed.

And think of the movies! I wonder how many trees died to print scripts and build sets for 6 movies and a TV series

One could argue that Tolkien is an enemy to the trees. [Warning unverified sources and very rough maths lie below]

    • The LOTR Trilogy has sold 150 million copies, and the Hobbit has sold 142 million source
    • Each LOTR book has a (very rough) average of 430 pages, while the Hobbit has ~360. This totals to 115,620,000,000 pages printed
    • The average tree creates ~20,000 sheets of paper source

This means Tolkien is responsible for the deaths of at least 5,781,000 trees. The Ents would not be happy

  • 100% agree. There is tons of delicious vegetarian/vegan food, but vegetarian/vegan substitutions of traditionally meat based dishes range from terrible to just okay.

Carb replacement dishes have the same problem. Spaghetti Squash is delicious when cooked as a vegetable, but throwing Ragu on it and pretending it is pasta is just sad.
