everyone is so wrong about it. “ohhh it’s boring” “it needed more time to flesh out its ideas” “the characters suck”
when your 4 episode ova ends with the main character looking at the camera and saying “i may disagree with the revolutionaries on some matters but given that we both agree the oppressor shouldn’t be bombing us and extracting our labor i have no choice but to join them in armed revolt” and has a miners revolt turning into a general strike you can get away with a lot, but the complaints aren’t even true! it makes the most of its runtime, looks great, and leaves you thinking. what more could you want out of a 4 episode ova?
It’s literally the first ever OVA. A medium that eventually became known for gory horror/edgelord movies and porn. Just like Tomino inventing the Isekai and Kazunori Ito (Oshii’s main collaborator for Patlabor) making the first VRMMORPG anime, and of course Miyazaki creating a character that would accidentally kickstart the infamous mid 80s “lolicon boom”.
Leftist anime directors have a terrible track record for creating stuff anime would be infamous for, for some reason.
As for Dallos, I watched two episodes back in the day but didn’t like it much - maybe a rewatch would be good, as well as a return to my slow quest to watch every non-pornographic-and-non-Angel-Cop 80s OVA now that I caught up to Kaiji. (read Kaiji)
that is a weird thing, huh? i mean, tomino didn’t exactly invent isekai but he certainly brought it into the anime mainstream
definitely worth watching. don’t expect everything to be completely wrapped up nicely, but it’s only 2 hours and i really love it
Kazunori Ito (Oshii’s main collaborator for Patlabor) making the first VRMMORPG anime
I feel like this is the third or fourth comment of yours that has me in a “damn, I need to rewatch .hack//sign” mood lol. Honestly haven’t seen it since around release, but it was definitely a favorite of mine back then. It’s a shame that the games probably aged poorly.
Never heard of it. Sounds tight. Commenting so I remember.
it rules. the lead revolutionary is a guy named dog mccoy whose last deed is to talk about how the general strike crippled the earth economy and is definitely going to lead to change because it impacted the capitalists
Dallos is dope!
I think people who aren’t used to watching 80s OVAs go in expecting a movie when the short ones are more like a TV pilot than anything.
that’s fair, but i think it totally works as a self contained story. like, if it had become a 50 episode anime afterwards i would watch that and enjoy it, but i don’t need to see how things go after shun gains class consciousness and i don’t need to know the secrets of dallos
Starting ep3 now. Interesting, worth watching just for the blatant politics.
it may be the most openly leftist anime i’ve seen
My thoughts exactly, no beating around the bush at all. Iron blooded orphans is the only thing I can think of that comes close.
Not an anime, but have you seen Damnation? It’s on Netflix.
i haven’t but that does seem interesting. and ibo rules, i’m glad you agree. the strike in that show is very good. i’ve heard good things about mamoru oshii’s patlabor movies and how they grapple with the fall of the soviet union, but i haven’t seen them yet
while we’re recommending non-anime but extremely communist things, have you seen punishment park? extremely good fake documentary about a slightly different nixon presidency. never have i felt more death to america. like half the dialogue in it was improvised by a bunch of leftists they got together for the movie
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Aw crap, this didn’t show up in my notifications.
I watched the the first season of Patlabor but not the movies yet. It was interesting but I didn’t find it too radical. Hmm, I’m now realizing that what I watched was the ova. Oops.😅
I have downloaded Punishment Park, but haven’t watched it yet. One of these days.
yeah the ova is mostly a comedy about cops with robots, the movies are apparently a completely different thing.
fair warning punishment park is the most doomer thing i’ve seen. the only competition is first reformed

Ah, that makes more sense, like it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t revolutionary.😅

lol noted. Since we’re recommending blatant leftist stuff, have you gotten a chance to watch I’m a Virgo yet? It’s Boots Riley’s latest Communist edutainment program. Quite good.
i haven’t, but i loved sorry to bother you and have been meaning to get around to it
